It was my first volunteer experience. Despite my young age, it was not difficult to recognise the characteristics of a reality so different from my own—characteristics that, despite various health and social challenges, are not necessarily negative.
Personally, I felt it was both appropriate and necessary to immerse myself in the customs and traditions of the place, even if only for a short time. This meant hard work on the farm and in the fields, from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM every day.
What stood out immediately was the physical effort required and the strong sense of sacrifice, particularly within AINA. Paradoxically, especially on the farm, fatigue rarely showed on people’s faces.
Beyond the remarkable care for the land and livestock, what left the deepest impression were the countless smiles—sincere, innocent, and full of warmth. These, along with the genuine gestures of kindness and heartfelt embraces, are what truly stay with you. It was striking to see how aware these children are of their situation and yet how, in many ways, they consider themselves fortunate compared to others in even more difficult conditions.
One thing is certain: they are truly wonderful.
This experience not only met but far exceeded my expectations. In fact, I would say it positively “unsettled” them, particularly in terms of the deep and meaningful relationships I was able to build with both the children and the staff.
